Many people look at moving averages only for golden and death crosses. The moment MA5 crosses above MA20, they go long, only to get repeatedly burned after buying near the top of a range. The problem is that a golden cross only indicates that the short-term average price is rising; it does not mean the trend is healthy. A healthy trend depends on three things: whether the moving averages are aligned properly, whether the price is holding above them, and whether momentum indicators are strengthening in sync.
