You see a token trading around $100 and think, Okay, that's the price.
But look a little closer. Buyers may be willing to pay $99.90, while sellers want $100.10.
That $0.20 gap is called the spread.
If you buy immediately, you pay closer to the seller's price. If you sell immediately, you get closer to the buyer's price.
So even when there is no obvious fee, getting in and out of a trade can still cost you.
And when a market is thin or volatile, that gap can get much wider. That is why price isn't the whole story.
