😂September U.S. PPI blew up! Inflation surged 6.3%, far above the 5.4% expected. Can the “soft landing” narrative continue?
First, the data. September final demand PPI jumped 1.3% month over month, far above the expected 0.5% and the biggest monthly increase since March 2022. The year-over-year figure surged to 6.3%, its highest since December 2022 and well above the 5.4% expected.
Energy prices were the clear driver. Overall goods prices rose 2.6%, the largest monthly increase on record. Energy prices surged 10.8%, with gasoline soaring 20.3% in a single month.
