#USEquityPerpetualFuturesGoLive US stock perpetuals just crossed a major line. On November 3, 2026, CFTC Chairman Michael Selig said "equity perpetual futures," which are perpetual contracts tied to individual shares, can now trade on CFTC-registered exchanges. For a market that has spent years watching crypto perps dominate derivatives volume, this is a structural shift, not just another headline.

What led to this

- January 29, 2026: The CFTC directed staff to use its authorities to bring perpetual derivatives onshore, with appropriate safeguards.
- March 11, 2026: A CFTC-SEC memorandum of understanding was signed, clarifying how the two agencies would share oversight.
- May 29, 2026: The first US-listed bitcoin perpetual (Kalshi BTCPERP) was approved.
- November 3, 2026: Equity perpetual futures were deemed approved for trading on US exchanges.

Single-stock contracts fall under existing security futures rules, so they will be supervised jointly by the CFTC and the SEC. That is the key difference from many offshore venues: clearer jurisdiction, regulated market structure, and surveillance requirements.

What a perpetual is, and why traders care

A perpetual future has no expiry date, so you don't have to roll positions the way you would with quarterly contracts. A funding mechanism periodically transfers payments between longs and shorts to keep the contract price close to the underlying spot price. For equities, this adds something new: continuous exposure to a stock outside the regular cash session, which is 9:30 to 16:00 US Eastern time on exchange days. Overnight earnings reactions, macro releases, and geopolitical headlines can now be traded as they happen.

Demand was already visible before this approval. Offshore and decentralized venues have been trading stock-linked perps for some time. trade[XYZ] reported more than $650 billion in cumulative volume since launching just over a year ago, with $58.9 billion of Q2 2026 volume in equity and index contracts, according to figures from the Hyperliquid Research Collective. Intercontinental Exchange, owner of the NYSE, has taken a stake in trade[XYZ] and wants to build a US-regulated perpetuals market using its technology, with execution on the Hyperliquid blockchain. Coinbase has also launched stock perpetuals for eligible customers outside the US, covering large-cap names and ETF perps such as SPY and QQQ where permitted.

Where Gate stands

Gate already offers stock-linked perpetual products. The xStocks perpetuals are USDT-settled and offer 1x to 10x leverage in both long and short directions, and Gate has listed stock perps such as the pre-market JIO perpetual. These products track tokenized or synthetic stock exposure. They are not the new CFTC-approved single-stock contracts. Before trading, check the Gate announcements page for the exact product, contract specifications, funding rules, and availability in your region, because stock perps can be adjusted or postponed around volatility.

Differences to understand before you trade

Spot stock, tokenized stock, and perpetual futures carry different risks. Owning shares gives you ownership rights and no forced liquidation. A tokenized stock depends on the issuer and its backing. A perpetual is a leveraged derivative, so your return depends on mark price, funding, margin mode, and liquidation rules. Two products can both show "NVDA" and still behave differently, so read the contract specification rather than the ticker alone.

What to watch in the first phase

1. Liquidity depth: New contracts need tight spreads and deep order books, especially at the open and around earnings releases.
2. Funding rates: During strong directional moves, funding can become a meaningful ongoing cost or income stream.
3. Mark price versus last price: Thin books can produce sharp wicks. Know which price triggers liquidation on your position.
4. Leverage discipline: 10x on a stock that can gap 8% overnight carries very different risk from 10x on a major crypto asset. Size positions for gaps, not for normal days.
5. 24/7 trading is not 24/7 liquidity: Overnight and weekend prices can drift from the regular cash market, and spreads may widen when fewer participants are active.
6. Rollout pace: Approval opens the door, but actual listings, venues, product designs, and rules will develop over months, not hours.

A simple pre-trade checklist

Confirm the underlying and contract type. Check leverage, margin mode, and maintenance requirements. Look at funding history and the current funding rate. Set a stop-loss, and understand whether it is a market or limit order in fast conditions. Plan for an earnings date or macro event that could fall while you are holding. Never put more into one name than you can afford to see gap against you.

Risk notice

Perpetual futures are leveraged derivatives. Losses can be fast and may exceed the margin you put up, depending on the product and margin mode. This post is market education, not investment advice, and it is not a recommendation to buy or sell any security or token.

Bottom line

The CFTC approval does not make equity perps risk-free, but it moves stock perpetuals from an offshore niche toward a regulated framework. Expect more venues, more products, and more debate over liquidation design, funding mechanics, and price integrity. Trade with a plan, size for gaps, and let the data guide your decisions. #WCTCS9
