Mercado Bitcoin Hit By 46M Hack - Clear And Verified Read

Brazil's largest crypto venue Mercado Bitcoin lost about 46 million USD on Monday, in a week that is now seen as worst ever for crypto security.

What Happened

Venue confirmed a security incident on Monday Nov 2. Blockchain trackers estimated drain at 40 to 46 million USD, with Arkham putting figure at 46.3 million USD. Attack spread across at least 10 blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, Arbitrum, Avalanche and BNB Chain.

Method was not a smart contract bug. Attackers used valid signing credentials and moved funds via normal transfers, which is why drain could span many chains at once. Initial review noted attackers first probed small wallets, then scaled to larger ones.

Timeline

Early Monday morning, unauthorized access to several hot wallets was seen. Team triggered emergency shutdown and paused deposits and withdrawals. Even after pause notice, some linked wallets still received funds for hours, showing lag between detection and full isolation.

This breach came just four days after a 6.36 billion USD hack on another major venue, the largest financial theft ever recorded in any form. Combined, last week tops 6.4 billion USD in losses, worst week in crypto security history.

Freeze And Recovery

Stablecoin issuers acted fast. Tether confirmed freeze of more than 4.5 million USDT tied to incident. Together, Tether and Circle froze about 6.2 million USD as of mid afternoon UTC on Nov 2. About 20 million USD was moved to newly created wallets before freeze could take hold. Venue said there was no harm to customers and no data breach.

Why Cross Chain Drain Is Hard To Stop

When funds move across 10 chains, each chain has its own finality and its own rules. USDT and USDC can be frozen by issuers, but native coins like BTC and SOL cannot, they can only be tracked. That is why only a fraction was frozen so far.

Market Take

For users, this is a reminder that hot wallet key safety is still weakest link. Even with strong code, if signing keys are exposed, funds can move as normal transfers.

For venue, next steps are key rotation, multi sig upgrade, hardware isolation for signing, and third party audit of access logs.

For traders, watch recovery rate. So far 4.5 to 6.2 million USD frozen of 46 million USD total. If more is frozen, market may see it as positive. If not, trust may take longer to rebuild.

In short, 46 million USD loss via valid credentials across many chains shows why custody and key management matter more than ever.
