#SolanaMajorUpgradeScheduled What's Actually Changing (and What Isn't)

The date is locked in, and honestly, the internet is already mixing up facts and hype. I read through the announcements so here's the clean version, in a Myth vs Fact style.

The basics first

The Solana Foundation says the Alpenglow upgrade will activate on mainnet in epoch 1064 on Wednesday, October 21, at about 15:00 UTC. Anza, a core developer of the network, announced the date on October 13. One small caution: the upgrade is still subject to change.

Before vs After

Before (today): The network uses TowerBFT, and transaction finality takes roughly 12.8 seconds.

After: Alpenglow retires TowerBFT in favor of the Votor voting protocol, targeting finality of roughly 150 milliseconds. For developers, the "confirmed" and "finalized" commitment levels become one and the same.

Myth: "Solana is getting a brand new chain."
Fact: No. The Solana Virtual Machine, transaction formats, programs and fees are left alone. It's a consensus change, not a rebuild. The Foundation also says ordinary transactions will execute the same way.

Myth: "Transactions will suddenly be faster to send."
Fact: The big gain is *finality*, meaning the moment a payment becomes irreversible. Today a payment confirms quickly, but until the roughly 13-second clock runs out the block could in theory still be dropped. Alpenglow closes that gap, which matters most for checkouts, DeFi apps and trading desks.

Myth: "If TPS drops after the upgrade, something broke."
Fact: Expect lower numbers on dashboards. Vote transactions will move out of blocks, so headline transaction counts and TPS figures will drop sharply without any drop in real activity. Don't panic-read the charts that day.

Myth: "It's untested."
Fact: The upgrade has already run on test and developer networks. Insiders describe it as about 18 months of work for a migration that happens in a single slot.

A few security and design details

- When 80% or more of stake backs a block in the first round, it finalizes on the spot.
- The design is built to tolerate up to 20% malicious stake plus 20% offline stake.
- Rotor, which would replace the Turbine block-data protocol, is planned for a later release and has no date yet.

What about the price?

This is where it gets less exciting. SOL trades near $102 with roughly a $60B market cap, and U.S. Solana funds saw withdrawals in nine of ten October sessions, according to SoSoValue. Another outlet put the price near $107, with analysts watching $100 as support and $115 as resistance. The honest line from one report: a faster network does not automatically mean a higher price. History is mixed too, since Ethereum fell 30 days after two of its last three major upgrades.

My checklist for October 21

1. Remember the timing: about 15:00 UTC.
2. Don't treat a TPS drop as bad news.
3. Watch fund flows and validator updates, not just the price.
4. Treat any delay as normal, not a failure.
