PPI surprise and interest rate expectations
The Producer Price Index (PPI) data released in the U.S. for September came in significantly higher than anticipated. On an annual basis, the PPI rose by 6.3%, reaching its highest level in four years, while the monthly increase stood at 1.3%. Core PPI also exceeded forecasts at 5.0%, and retail sales outperformed expectations, coming in at 0.8%. Following these figures, the market-implied probability of an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve in October climbed to 40%. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly indicated that further rate hikes might be necessary, even as inflation has risen to 3.7%. A high-interest-rate environment exerts pressure on non-yielding assets, which serves as the primary macroeconomic reason behind Bitcoin’s 0.36% decline over the last 15 minutes.
Divergence in institutional demand and ETF flows
On the institutional front, the picture is mixed. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a net outflow of approximately $487 million during the most recent trading day, with total assets currently standing at $107.4 billion. Another point drawing market attention is the $81,500 level—the average cost basis for ETF investors. This level was breached briefly, but the price has since recovered. Meanwhile, $80,000 stands out as a critical psychological threshold. The weakening in institutional inflows is viewed as a significant indicator regarding the funding side of the recent price pullback.
Geopolitical risks and weakness in tech stocks
On the geopolitical front, tensions are escalating. Reports suggest that the U.S. military is preparing contingency plans for strikes against Iran’s energy and nuclear facilities, while Iran continues to target vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This, combined with a high-interest-rate environment, is fueling sharp volatility in "safe-haven" assets like gold. Separately, weakness in technology stocks is indirectly impacting Bitcoin. Semiconductor stocks have shed over $2 trillion in value since early October, with the SOXX ETF declining for seven consecutive trading sessions. Investor uncertainty regarding the returns on artificial intelligence investments is dampening the appetite for risk assets; because the crypto market is closely linked to risk appetite in the tech sector, this weakness is spilling over into Bitcoin.
Institutional buying and the technical outlook
Despite these pressures, institutional investors and large-scale wallet holders continue to accumulate. Cardone Capital purchased 60 BTC (approximately $4.8 million), while its founder, Grant Cardone, made an additional $5 million purchase, bringing his total holdings to nearly 3,000 BTC. Furthermore, a UK-based firm acquired an additional 83 BTC, raising its total holdings to 2,830 BTC. Furthermore, holders of US spot Bitcoin ETFs moved into profit in September, with BTC gaining approximately 43% in value during the third quarter.
From a technical perspective, Bitcoin is trading just below its 30-day moving average ($82,319). The SuperTrend indicator provides support at the $79,676 level. On the downside, $79,795 stands out as the low for the past 24 hours. On the upside, the initial resistance is at $82,630; a sustained move above this level could be interpreted as a sign of recovery.
Key factors to monitor in the coming period are clear: upcoming inflation and employment data leading up to the Fed’s October meeting, whether ETF inflows can maintain their current pace, and the course of geopolitical developments. These three variables will determine Bitcoin’s short-term direction.
