Gate’s WCTC S9 starts Oct 26 and the headline number is big. I’m not here to sell it. I read the rules page, so here’s the math, the fine print and the risks.

1. Structure and dates
The trading window runs Oct 26 to Nov 25, 16:00 UTC+8 (08:00 UTC), about 30 days. The team track is split into two halves, Oct 26 to Nov 10 and Nov 10 to 25, taking 45% and 55% of the team pool. There’s also a solo track and a BTC/USDT event-contract PK. The leaderboard guide mentions solo rewards down to the top 300, plus experience tickets for ranks 301 to 1000. I couldn’t confirm that on the rules page.

2. The prize pool is a ceiling
The official page lists up to 6,000,000 USDT, made of maximums: up to 3.2M team, 400k solo, 400k PK. It unlocks dynamically with the number of valid traders, and a valid trader means 5,000 USDT of converted volume. The page itself says the maximum isn’t what actually gets paid. One report cites 21,000+ registrations and 2,454 squads in the first 24 hours. I couldn’t find the unlock thresholds, so I can’t give you an expected payout.

3. The weighting math
Per the guide, stocks and event contracts count at 200%, spot, ETFs and flash swap at 150%, futures at 100%. Solo rewards need 20,000 converted volume. Real notional to get there: 10,000 in stocks or event contracts, about 13,333 in spot, 20,000 in futures. Same threshold, very different real turnover.

4. Volume is cheap, price risk isn’t
Hypothetically, assume 0.10% all-in cost (fees plus slippage). A 10,000 notional costs about $10. A 1% adverse move on that same position costs $100, ten times more. With leverage it’s worse. The contest rewards turnover. Only the team profit board looks at P&L, and it still needs 20,000 cumulative volume.

5. Team fine print
A team needs 5 members to make the leaderboards. Once it has 5 and the contest has started, nobody can leave. On each team leaderboard, the captain gets 20%, the top 10 qualified members split 40%, and everyone else splits the last 40%. My example: with 100 qualified members, the top 10 get 4% each and the other 90 get about 0.44% each. The captain’s cut is roughly 45x a tail member’s. Join with eyes open.

6. Eligibility and payout
API users, VIP 15+, market makers, corporate and institutional accounts and sub-accounts are excluded. KYC is required to receive rewards, and some regions, including the UK, are restricted. Rewards are paid within 15 business days after the event ends and review is complete, and some come as vouchers with their own terms. Wash trading and self-trading are banned.

7. Lucky Launchpad
The pool is 725,000 USDT, with a free launch on first entry. Prizes range from USDT to vouchers, fee rebates, random tokens or stocks and merchandise. A guaranteed prize isn’t the same as guaranteed cash.

My take: This is a volume-weighted contest, so the edge comes from knowing the rules, not from trading more. I’d pick tracks based on what I’d trade anyway, keep size small, and treat event-contract PK as the highest-variance part. Ranking high and making money are two different things.

Not financial advice.

Solo or team? And which weighted product would you actually trade for the points?
