#EthereumAndBaseSplitOnAccountAbstraction Ethereum and Base Split on Account Abstraction: A Debate Over the Future of Wallets
Account abstraction is becoming an increasingly important part of Ethereum’s development, and differences between Ethereum and Base are drawing attention to a bigger question: How should blockchain wallets and user transactions evolve to become simpler, smarter, and more accessible?
Traditional crypto wallets can be difficult for newcomers. Users often need to manage seed phrases, pay gas fees with a specific token, and understand complicated transaction processes. Account abstraction aims to change this experience by making wallets more flexible and programmable.
With account abstraction, wallets can potentially support features such as gas sponsorship, transaction batching, automated actions, spending controls, and more user-friendly recovery options. These improvements could make blockchain applications feel closer to familiar Web2 experiences.
Ethereum’s Approach
Ethereum has been working toward a more flexible account model while maintaining compatibility with its broader decentralized ecosystem. The long-term goal is to make advanced wallet functionality more native to the network rather than relying entirely on external infrastructure.
This approach could provide developers with a stronger foundation for building wallets and applications that offer users a smoother experience.
Base Pushes for Practical Adoption
Base, meanwhile, has placed significant emphasis on making blockchain applications easier for everyday users and developers.
As a major Ethereum Layer-2 ecosystem, Base has strong incentives to reduce friction around transactions and improve the onboarding experience. Its approach highlights an important question: Should account abstraction evolve primarily through Ethereum’s core protocol, or can Layer-2 networks move faster with application-focused solutions?
This difference in priorities can create healthy competition and experimentation across the Ethereum ecosystem.
Why Account Abstraction Matters
The importance of account abstraction goes beyond wallet technology.
If users can interact with blockchain applications without constantly thinking about gas fees, complex signing processes, or wallet management, crypto could become significantly easier to use.
For developers, programmable accounts can also unlock new possibilities for payments, gaming, DeFi, social applications, and consumer-focused Web3 products.
The ultimate goal is simple: make blockchain technology less complicated while preserving its underlying benefits.
My View
In my opinion, Ethereum and Base do not necessarily need to follow exactly the same path. Different approaches can encourage experimentation and reveal which solutions work best at scale.
The real winner should be the user.
If account abstraction can make transactions faster, safer, cheaper, and easier to understand, it could become one of the key technologies supporting the next wave of blockchain adoption.
The bigger question is no longer whether crypto wallets need to improve—it is how quickly the ecosystem can make blockchain feel as simple as the applications people already use every day.
