#8月CPI今晚公布 At 20:30 tonight, one data point will decide whether next week brings smiles or tears!

At 8:30 tonight, traders around the world will most likely be glued to their screens—the U.S. August CPI will be released right on time at 20:30 Beijing time.
Don't underestimate this one number. It is the last major inflation report before next week's Fed meeting. The previous PPI report had already pushed the probability of a September rate hike from 60% to around 70%. If CPI comes in even hotter this time, the market will have to recalculate "how many rate hikes" are coming.

Why is tonight's "data meal" so appealing?
CPI measures how much the prices of what ordinary Americans actually spend money on have risen. The Fed watches it with laser focus, because whether to raise rates or when to cut them all depends on what it says.
But there's one trap that needs to be made clear—the market is not trading the number itself, but the gap between "the number and expectations."
The consensus is currently: headline y/y 3.4%, core y/y 2.4%, and core m/m 0.2%.
• Higher than this → upside surprise → hawkish
• Lower than this → surprise cooling → dovish
• Exactly in line → the most frustrating outcome, leaving the suspense until next week's FOMC
So don't just remember "3.4%." Remember the gap between expectations and the actual result, such as "expected 3.4%, came in at 3.6%." That is the source of tonight's volatility.
For U.S. stocks: tech stocks are the most sensitive
The chain is simple: hot CPI → higher rate-hike expectations → Treasury yields surge → discount rates rise → future cash flows are discounted.
• Hot CPI: The Nasdaq, AI, and growth stocks take the first hit, while S&P futures shake directly in premarket trading
• Cool CPI: Rate-cut expectations recover, and growth stocks bounce the hardest
• In line with expectations: Initial choppiness, with the dot plot settling the matter next week
The data comes out at 20:30 before the market opens, and U.S. stocks do not open until 21:30, so futures will go through the initial reaction first, and the actual open will reflect the digested version.
For silver: it is even more complicated than gold
Silver has a split identity—it is both a precious metal and an industrial metal.
The chain for hot CPI:
Rate-hike expectations ↑ → dollar ↑, real rates ↑ → the cost of holding non-yielding silver rises → short-term sell-off
That is why silver plunged nearly 5% on the night of the previous PPI report, performing even worse than gold.
But it has another side—if the combination is truly "runaway inflation + recession concerns," the industrial-demand story and the safe-haven story can play out together, potentially triggering a rebound. So silver's volatility tonight will be wilder than gold's; don't apply gold's temperament to it.

Don't let a pile of subcomponents confuse you. Watching these three is enough:
【1】Core CPI m/m---0.2% is the dividing line---≤0.2% → rate-hike expectations fade, giving silver and growth stocks room to breathe--- 0.3%+ → rate hikes are basically locked in, and the valuation sell-off continues
【2】Whether the 3.4% y/y line is breached
【3】Whether the 10-year Treasury yield surges to 5% after the release

Tonight's data is not telling you what to buy tomorrow; it is telling the market how the Fed will speak next week.
Whichever way the gap between expectations and reality leans, that is the direction the script for U.S. stocks and silver will turn. $BTC
