Ethereum’s biggest scaling story may not be about Ethereum getting busier.
It may be about users becoming increasingly comfortable not using Ethereum mainnet directly.

That sounds strange at first, but look at what is happening across the ecosystem.

Rollups are taking more execution off Ethereum, while Ethereum continues to provide the security and data-availability layer underneath them.

The blob market is a good example.

Since EIP-4844, rollups have had a dedicated and much cheaper way to publish transaction data to Ethereum. And now blob demand is reaching new highs as L2 activity continues expanding.

That creates an interesting economic structure:

Users execute on L2.
Apps build on L2.
Liquidity moves through L2.
Ethereum settles and secures the underlying system.

And this isn't just a theoretical model anymore.

Arbitrum reported 478 million transactions during the first half of 2026, while average monthly stablecoin transfer volume exceeded $70 billion. It also says its ecosystem has become a major platform for tokenized real-world assets and institutional projects.

Base is following a similar direction, with its distribution advantage coming from the Coinbase ecosystem, while new chains are increasingly being launched using established L2 technology stacks.

Robinhood Chain is a particularly interesting recent example.

The network generated a record $3.75M in user-paid fees on September 1, while DEX volume exceeded $1.5B and TVL moved above $750M.

That tells me something important.

The L2 race is no longer simply about:

“Which chain has the cheapest gas?”

The bigger competition is becoming:

Which L2 can attract the users, applications, liquidity and distribution that create sustainable activity?

And that changes Ethereum's role too.

I don't see L2 growth as Ethereum losing its importance.

I see it as Ethereum potentially becoming something different:

the settlement court underneath an expanding network of execution environments.

The user may never care which layer settles the transaction.

They will care that the transaction is fast, cheap and reliable.

If that behavior continues, the biggest change may not be that Ethereum disappears from the user experience.

It may be that Ethereum becomes so deeply embedded underneath the ecosystem that users don't need to think about it at all.

That, to me, is a much more interesting L2 thesis than simply saying “rollups are cheaper.”

Ethereum isn't necessarily losing the highway.

It may be turning into the infrastructure underneath thousands of highways.
