Gate Enters the US Stock Options Market — 9 Major Stocks, USDT Settlement, No Physical Delivery
The boundary between cryptocurrency trading and traditional financial markets is becoming increasingly difficult to define.
On September 2, Gate launched US Stock Options trading, giving eligible users access to options linked to some of the world's largest publicly traded companies directly through a crypto trading platform.
The initial lineup includes nine major names:
Nvidia
Tesla
Apple
Meta
AMD
Micron
Amazon
Alphabet Class A
Broadcom
For traders familiar with traditional options, the structure is particularly interesting because these contracts are designed around crypto-native settlement rather than conventional share delivery.
1. Settlement Happens in USDT
The biggest difference is the settlement mechanism.
These options do not result in the delivery of the underlying shares.
Instead, positions are cash-settled in USDT.
When an option reaches settlement, the payout is calculated using the underlying stock's price during a specified settlement window. Gate states that the average price during the 30-minute period before official settlement is used to determine the final settlement value.
This creates a structure that gives traders exposure to the price movement of major US equities without requiring the transfer of the actual shares.
For example, a trader can take a bullish position on Nvidia through an option contract without receiving Nvidia shares if the contract is exercised.
The exposure remains within the USDT-based trading environment.
2. No Separate Brokerage Account
Another major difference is accessibility.
Gate states that users do not need to open a separate traditional brokerage or margin account to access the initial US Stock Options offering.
The trading experience is integrated directly into the Gate ecosystem and is available during regular US market trading hours.
For the initial launch, Gate is also waiving platform fees and brokerage commissions, although applicable regulatory fees associated with the relevant markets can still apply.
This lowers one of the traditional barriers between crypto traders and US equity derivatives.
Instead of maintaining separate accounts for cryptocurrency and stock options, users can potentially access both markets through the same platform.
3. Part of a Larger Expansion Into US Markets
The options launch should not be viewed as an isolated product release.
Gate has been expanding its exposure to traditional financial markets.
Earlier this year, the platform introduced direct trading for US stocks and ETFs through a partnership with Alpaca.
That expansion reportedly brought access to more than 10,000 US-listed securities.
The stock product allows users to use USDT within the broader trading experience.
US Stock Options represent another layer of that strategy.
The progression is straightforward:
Crypto → US Stocks → ETFs → Stock Options
Instead of treating crypto and traditional markets as separate ecosystems, Gate is building a broader trading environment that attempts to bring multiple asset classes together.
Why This Matters
The most interesting aspect of this launch is not simply the nine stocks available at launch.
It is the structure.
For years, crypto platforms experimented with tokenized representations of traditional stocks.
Options are different.
An option is a derivative whose value is linked to the underlying asset.
Gate is therefore not simply creating a digital version of Nvidia or Tesla stock.
It is providing derivative exposure to those companies while maintaining a crypto-based settlement system.
That distinction matters.
A trader can potentially use calls to express a bullish view, puts to express a bearish view or hedge an existing position, while keeping settlement within USDT.
The Crypto and Traditional Market Divide Is Narrowing
This development reflects a broader trend across financial markets.
Crypto exchanges increasingly want to provide access to assets that traditionally required separate brokerage relationships.
At the same time, traditional financial institutions are exploring digital assets, stablecoins, tokenization, and blockchain-based settlement.
The two industries are moving toward each other.
For retail traders, this could eventually mean that the distinction between a "crypto account" and a "traditional investment account" becomes less important.
One platform could potentially provide access to crypto, equities, ETFs, options, and other financial instruments.
But The Structure Comes With Risks
Greater accessibility does not mean lower risk.
Options are complex derivatives, and leverage can significantly magnify both gains and losses.
A trader can lose a substantial portion, or potentially all, of the capital committed to an options position depending on the contract structure and market movement.
The USDT settlement mechanism also means traders are not receiving the underlying shares.
This is important for anyone accustomed to traditional equity options where assignment or exercise can result in stock delivery.
The operational structure is also different from using a US-regulated brokerage account.
Gate's product operates within its own platform framework, and users should understand the applicable jurisdiction, counterparty, settlement, liquidity, and platform risks before trading.
These products should therefore not be viewed as identical to options traded through a traditional US brokerage.
Why USDT Settlement Could Matter
Stablecoin settlement introduces an interesting possibility for crypto-native traders.
A trader who already holds USDT does not necessarily need to convert those funds into fiat before taking an options position through the platform.
This can make the trading experience more familiar to users who primarily operate within digital-asset markets.
It also creates a potential bridge between two markets that have historically operated with different settlement systems.
The important question will be whether traders actually adopt this model at scale.
The Bigger Picture
Gate's expansion into US equities and now stock options reflects a broader competition among trading platforms.
The battle is no longer simply about offering more cryptocurrencies.
Platforms are increasingly competing on how many financial markets they can bring together inside one account.
The initial nine names are already some of the most actively followed companies in the technology and semiconductor sectors.
Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, Meta, AMD, Micron, Amazon, Alphabet, and Broadcom represent significant exposure to artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cloud computing, advertising, consumer technology, and electric vehicles.
That gives traders access to companies that frequently experience substantial price movements and options activity.
What Comes Next?
If adoption is strong, the initial nine-stock lineup could become only the beginning.
More equities, additional options contracts, different expirations, and potentially broader derivatives functionality could follow.
The larger trend is clear:
Crypto platforms are moving beyond crypto.
The same infrastructure that once focused almost entirely on Bitcoin and altcoins is increasingly being used to connect traders with traditional financial assets.
The question is no longer whether crypto exchanges will interact with traditional markets.
That process is already happening.
The more important question is how far this convergence will go.
Gate's US Stock Options launch is another step toward a market where crypto-native traders can access traditional equity derivatives without leaving a digital-asset environment.
For traders, that creates new possibilities.
But new possibilities also require new levels of risk awareness.
Access is becoming easier.
Markets are becoming more connected.
But understanding the product remains more important than simply having access to it.
Would you consider trading US stock options through a USDT-settled crypto platform?
