Manchester United could hardly have asked for a more demanding response opportunity. Michael Carrick was appointed permanently after guiding the Red Devils to third place last season, but the new campaign opened with a shock 0-2 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City. United dominated possession yet produced little where it mattered, leaving familiar questions about attacking efficiency and defensive reliability.

Now another promoted side arrives at Old Trafford.
A defeat would create an unwanted piece of Premier League history: United would become the first club to begin a season with consecutive losses against promoted teams. That pressure makes this more than an ordinary Matchweek 2 fixture.

Ipswich Town, meanwhile, arrive with exactly the kind of confidence United would rather not face. Gary O'Neil's side opened with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Portman Road, with Emersonn scoring before Jack Clarke delivered the late winner. THE BIG UNITED PROBLEM

The opening-day numbers tell an interesting story. United controlled approximately 72% possession against Hull and registered five shots on target, yet they still failed to find the net.

That suggests the issue was not simply possession. The bigger question is what United do with the ball once they reach the final third.

Bruno Fernandes remains central to the team's creativity, while the midfield rebuild continues with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. However, Carlos Baleba, the club's major £70m summer signing from Brighton, is unavailable with an ankle injury and could miss around three weeks.

Carrick therefore has to find a solution with the players already available.

WHY IPSWICH CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS

Ipswich have the momentum, confidence and transition threat that can punish an opponent forced to attack.

Emersonn and Clarke have already opened their scoring accounts, while captain Dara O'Shea provides leadership at the back. Ipswich also arrive after two consecutive victories, meaning they have little reason to sit back psychologically.

If United push too many players forward, Ipswich's counterattacking opportunities could become dangerous.

THE NUMBERS DON'T TELL THE WHOLE STORY

Opta's supercomputer still gives Manchester United the strongest probability:

United win: 66.4%
Draw: 18.3%
Ipswich win: 15.3%

But those numbers do not automatically suggest an easy home victory. The market's interest in Both Teams To Score and Ipswich +1.5 reflects the possibility of a much tighter contest.

Weather could add another variable, with rain expected in Manchester. A wet surface could increase the importance of second balls, physical battles and set pieces.

MY MATCH SCRIPT

I expect Manchester United to start aggressively because the psychological pressure is already significant. Old Trafford will demand an immediate response, and Carrick cannot afford another slow or ineffective attacking performance.

Ipswich should stay compact, absorb pressure and wait for opportunities in transition. If United fail to convert their early chances, the visitors could grow into the match.

But the combination of home advantage, greater individual quality and the need for a reaction should eventually give United the edge.

FINAL PREDICTION

Manchester United 2-1 Ipswich Town

I expect Bruno Fernandes to play a decisive role as United finally convert their possession into goals. Ipswich should create enough danger to score, but United's urgency at Old Trafford should be enough to secure the three points.

Upset alert: Moderate.

Ipswich have the form to make this uncomfortable, but I still expect Manchester United to respond rather than suffer another promoted-side shock.
