#BTCBreaks$81k
This situation resembles a combination of a breakout and a short squeeze rather than a clear move driven solely by fundamental data.
Surpassing the $81,000 level triggered a massive wave of short squeezes. As BTC surged toward a 15-week high, over $260 million in short positions were liquidated in just four hours.
BTC briefly climbed above $81,000; this rally was supported by the following factors:
US Treasury buyback/liquidity expectations → lower bond yields and a weakening dollar (positive for BTC).
Strong spot ETF demand → approximately $1.92 billion in inflows last week.
Short position liquidations → over $3 billion in liquidations across the crypto market; this triggered forced buying and accelerated the breakout.
$82,000 or a pullback?
White House Crypto Summit and Policy Signals: Renewed optimism on the political and regulatory fronts further bolstered market sentiment.
For now, I would focus on the $80,000 level rather than $82,000.
Bullish scenario: BTC retests $80,000 and holds above it → in this case, $82,000 becomes a reasonable next target, followed by the $83,000–$85,000 zone.
Note: Much of the easy upside driven by the short squeeze has likely already occurred. If BTC decisively loses the $80,000 level, a pullback toward the $77,000–$79,000 range before a new attempt to move higher would not be surprising. Furthermore, the market has rapidly shifted from heavy short positions to increasingly leveraged long positions, which raises the risk of liquidations on the other side.
Whether BTC heads directly toward the $82,000–$88,000 range or experiences a temporary pullback to retest the $80,000 support level depends largely on whether sufficient spot market volume steps in to absorb these forced liquidations.
In summary, my view is this: $82,000 is possible, but I wouldn't chase the breakout. The critical test will be the retesting of the $80,000 level.
For Bitcoin to hold above $81,000, market mechanics must transition from short-term forced liquidations to organic, spot-driven buying demand.
How BTC Can Hold $81,000
Spot Market Absorption: The initial move past $81,000 was fueled by derivatives liquidations. To hold this level, spot order books (especially institutional desk flows via US ETFs) must absorb ongoing profit-taking rather than relying on leverage.
High-Volume Retest: Price often backtests a breakout level before continuing upward. A dip to the $80,000–$81,000 zone that quickly meets strong buy volume (forming long lower wicks on 4-hour or daily candles) would confirm previous resistance has flipped into strong support.
Funding Rate Normalization: Perpetual futures funding rates need to remain moderate. If funding rates spike excessively positive, it signals an over-leveraged long market vulnerable to long-squeeze pullbacks.
Key Technical Support & Resistance Levels
Resistance Levels (Above $81,000)
$82,000 – $82,700: The immediate hurdle. The mid-May local peak sits near $82,700, serving as major psychological and structural resistance.
$85,000: A key liquidity zone and major psychological benchmark where sell-side limit orders accumulate.
$88,000: Major Fibonacci extension target from the low-$60k accumulation range.
Support Levels (Below $81,000)
$79,500 – $80,000: Primary short-term support zone. This acts as the key level to validate the breakout structure.
$76,800 – $77,500: Secondary structural support matching recent consolidation nodes before the final leg up.
$72,500: Major downside cushion aligned with the previous breakout level from mid-August.
