Roma vs Fiorentina: Can Gasperini’s New Roma Turn the Olimpico Into a Winning Start?
Roma begin their 2026/27 Serie A campaign tonight at the Stadio Olimpico against Fiorentina, and this opening-round matchup looks less like a simple battle of form and more like a test of tactical discipline. With both teams still adjusting to their new-season structures, the side that controls space and manages transitions more effectively could gain the early advantage.
Roma finished third last season and return to the Champions League under Gian Piero Gasperini. Their summer recruitment has added depth, while the tactical identity remains familiar: a back-three system, aggressive wing-backs, intense pressing and fast vertical attacks. The projected setup points toward a 3-4-2-1, with Dybala operating between the lines and Malen offering pace and movement in the attacking phase.
The Olimpico could be Roma’s biggest advantage. At home, the Giallorossi should look to control territory through their wing-backs and midfield pressure, pushing Fiorentina deeper and forcing them to defend for longer periods. Dybala’s ability to receive between the lines could become particularly important if Fiorentina’s defensive shape becomes too narrow.
Fiorentina, meanwhile, arrive under Fabio Grosso with an attacking structure capable of creating problems. The squad has undergone changes and chemistry is still developing, but players such as Kean and Gudmundsson provide genuine attacking quality, while pace from wider areas gives Fiorentina a potential route into the match.
That creates the central tactical battle.
Roma are likely to press aggressively and attack quickly after recovering possession. Fiorentina can respond by looking for the space behind Roma’s advancing wing-backs. If Roma lose possession high up the pitch, Fiorentina could immediately attack the exposed channels. But if Roma’s first pressing wave works consistently, the home side should gain greater territorial control and create more sustained pressure.
The recent head-to-head record also gives Roma confidence. Their latest league meeting at the Olimpico ended in a 4–0 Roma victory in May, adding another psychological advantage before this new campaign begins.
However, an opening-round match always carries uncertainty. Neither side has yet established a full competitive rhythm, and tactical systems can look different once the intensity of a real league match replaces preseason preparation.
That is why I would not expect Roma to dominate easily.
Fiorentina have enough attacking quality to punish mistakes, particularly if Roma leave too much space during transitions. A disciplined away performance could keep the score close, especially if Fiorentina survive Roma’s early pressure.
Still, the combination of home advantage, Roma’s stronger defensive structure and Gasperini’s tactical familiarity gives the Giallorossi the edge for me.
My estimated view puts Roma around 57% to win, while the draw remains a serious possibility given the opening-round uncertainty.
The match could ultimately be decided by one small detail: whether Roma can turn possession and pressing into clear chances before Fiorentina find opportunities in transition.
If Roma score first, their tactical structure should make it difficult for Fiorentina to open the game without exposing additional space. If Fiorentina survive the opening spell and reach halftime level, the match could become much more balanced.
My prediction: Roma 1–0 Fiorentina.
The surprise scenario I would keep in mind is 1–1, particularly if Fiorentina successfully exploit the space behind Roma’s wing-backs.
For me, however, the Olimpico factor, Roma’s defensive organization and Gasperini’s tactical system make the home side the narrow favorite to begin the new Serie A campaign with three points.
