WHEN CHOOSING AN EXCHANGE, WHAT MATTERS MOST?

Gate’s latest proof-of-reserves update gives crypto users an important reason to think beyond trading fees, product variety and promotions. Total reported reserves have risen to approximately $8.22 billion, with an overall coverage ratio of 127%. Major assets including BTC, ETH and stablecoins are reported to maintain excess reserves.

But the bigger question is not simply how large an exchange’s reserves are.

The real question is what makes an exchange worth trusting for the long term.

For me, four areas deserve the most attention: reserves, liquidity, security and transparency.

RESERVES ARE THE FOUNDATION

Proof of reserves is important because users need visibility into the assets held by an exchange.

When funds are kept on a centralized platform, users cannot personally inspect its internal financial structure. A reserve report therefore provides useful information about the relationship between reported assets and user liabilities.

Gate’s reported $8.22 billion in reserves and 127% overall coverage ratio are meaningful data points. A coverage ratio above 100% indicates that reported reserves exceed the corresponding liabilities under the report’s methodology.

The reported excess reserves in BTC, ETH and stablecoins add another layer of information.

However, reserves should not be treated as the only measurement of exchange quality.

LIQUIDITY MATTERS

An exchange can have large reserves and still provide a poor trading experience if liquidity is weak.

For active traders, market depth is extremely important. During periods of high volatility, spreads, slippage and order execution can become major factors.

This is why I would ask:

How deep is the order book?

Can large orders be executed efficiently?

How does the platform perform when trading volume suddenly increases?

How reliable are deposits and withdrawals during periods of market stress?

These questions matter because an exchange is truly tested when the market becomes unpredictable.

SECURITY IS NON-NEGOTIABLE

The third pillar is security.

Users are trusting an exchange not only with their assets, but also with account access and withdrawal systems.

Strong reserves cannot compensate for weak security.

A long-term exchange should therefore have strong account protection, withdrawal controls, custody procedures and monitoring systems.

For me, security is not an additional feature. It is a basic requirement.

TRANSPARENCY BUILDS TRUST

This is where proof of reserves becomes especially valuable.

Transparency allows users to evaluate an exchange instead of simply relying on promises.

A large reserve number is useful, but regular reporting and clear information make that number much more meaningful.

That is why I consider transparency one of the most important qualities an exchange can demonstrate.

The question should not only be:

“How much does the exchange hold?”

It should also be:

“How consistently does the exchange show users what is happening?”

MY FOUR-METRIC FRAMEWORK

If I were evaluating an exchange for long-term use, I would look at four things.

First, reserves: Are reported assets sufficient compared with user liabilities?

Second, liquidity: Can users trade efficiently during both normal and extreme market conditions?

Third, security: Are assets and accounts protected by strong operational systems?

Fourth, transparency: Does the platform consistently provide information that helps users evaluate its financial position?

I would not choose one while completely ignoring the others.

Strong reserves with weak security are not enough.

Strong security with poor liquidity is not enough.

Great products without transparency are also not enough.

The strongest platform should combine all four.

WHY THIS MATTERS IN CRYPTO

Exchange quality becomes much more visible during major market movements.

When Bitcoin rallies or crashes quickly, trading volume increases, liquidations accelerate and users may enter or exit positions at the same time.

That is when liquidity, security and infrastructure are truly tested.

During calm markets, almost every platform can look reliable.

During extreme volatility, the difference becomes much clearer.

This is why exchange evaluation should happen before the next major market event, not after it.

Gate’s latest reported $8.22 billion reserve figure and 127% overall coverage ratio provide users with an important data point when evaluating the platform.

But I would not judge an exchange based on one number alone.

The stronger approach is to look at the complete picture.

Reserves show financial backing.

Liquidity supports efficient trading.

Security protects users and assets.

Transparency helps users understand the platform.

For me, transparency connects all of these factors because it gives users information with which to make better decisions.

THE FINAL QUESTION

So what do you value most when choosing an exchange for the long term?

Reserves?

Liquidity?

Security?

Transparency?

Personally, I believe the answer is a combination of all four.

An exchange should not only offer products and trading opportunities. It should also demonstrate financial strength, maintain liquidity, protect users and communicate transparently.

It is an opportunity for users to ask better questions about the platforms they trust with their assets.

In crypto, trust should not depend only on promises.
