$SLS ‌ SELLAS Life Sciences (SLS) crowned its three-week winning streak on Friday with a 15.37% jump to $15.46. The stock's market capitalization is approaching $3.12 billion, and its year-to-date return has exceeded 300%. But is this rally merely a sectoral carry, or is it a harbinger of the transformation the company itself has promised?

Two Candidates, One Target: New Hope in the Fight Against Cancer

SLS has two main weapons. First, its peptide immunotherapy galinpepimut-S (GPS). This targets the Wilms tumor 1 antigen and is currently in Phase 3 REGAL trials with patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Second, its CDK9 inhibitor SLS009 (tambiciclib). This is in Phase 2 trials with newly diagnosed AML patients.

The company has no commercial revenue yet. Net loss in the second quarter of 2026 increased to $9.6 million, resulting in a loss per share of $0.05. However, research and development spending rose to $6.3 million with the acceleration of the GPS and SLS009 studies. Cash position appears strong at $138.3 million.

REGAL Study: News Awaiting Alert

GPS's REGAL study targets AML patients in their second full remission. A threshold of 80 events (patient deaths) was set for the final analysis of the study. In May, this number reached 78, and the company announced that analysis would begin upon the occurrence of the 80th event. Management is currently blind to the results and stated that an announcement will be made when an event occurs, followed by a period of silence until the final results are released.

Industry Trend: The Moderna-Merck Effect

One of the biggest catalysts for the recent movement in SLS was the positive results from Moderna and Merck’s Phase 3 melanoma trial of their individualized mRNA cancer vaccine. Maxim Group analysts called this success a “victory for cancer vaccines” and argued that the rise in Moderna could see similar interest if SLS’s GPS study is successful. Analysts assigned a “BUY” rating and a $30 target price for SLS.

The overall market outlook for SLS is positive. Alliance Global Partners raised its target price from $25 to $35 and maintained its “BUY” rating. The 12-month average target price is $32.50, representing over 100% upside potential at the current price.

However, not all analysts agree. Simply Wall St’s valuation checks placed SLS in the “expensive” category with a score of 0 out of 6. The price-to-book ratio of 19.7x is significantly above the biotechnology sector average of 2.5x and its peers' 14.1x. This indicates that the market is premiuming the company's future potential over its current assets.

Expectations and Risks

The following factors will be decisive for SLS in the upcoming critical period:

• GPS Phase 3 REGAL results: Positive results could be a turning point for the company. • SLS009 Phase 2 data: Expected to be released in Q4 2026 for newly diagnosed AML patients. • Funding needs: Lack of revenue and increasing R&D expenditures keep the need for additional capital on the agenda.

SLS is a biotechnology story offering both high risk and high reward potential. Sectoral optimism in cancer vaccines and data from the REGAL study will determine the stock's fate.
