NVDA at $218.34: the setup is getting interesting
NVIDIA is trading around $218.34 in the latest market context, putting the stock back into a critical decision zone after a strong recovery from its late-July low near $190. The broader structure remains constructive, but the stock is now sitting between nearby support and a much more important resistance area. For me, NVDA is still a bullish-to-neutral setup, not a stock I would blindly chase at any price.
The bigger question is whether buyers can turn the current $218 area into a launchpad toward the previous highs, or whether the stock needs another consolidation before attempting the next breakout.
The chart has repaired itself
Recent price action shows a clear recovery from the $190.01 low recorded on July 29. NVDA then climbed through $200, $210 and $220, eventually reaching a recent swing high around $227.92 on August 17. The stock subsequently pulled back toward the $219 area, creating a short-term battle between buyers defending the recovery and sellers protecting the $225–$228 zone.
That makes the current $218.34 price particularly important.
If buyers can hold the $216–$218 region and push back above $222, the recent high becomes the obvious test. A decisive move through $228 would strengthen the bullish structure and put the $236.54 all-time high back into focus. Recent technical analysis has also identified the $221 area as important near-term support/resistance, with $229.50 as a potential breakout objective.
Support is more important than the headline
My first support zone is approximately $216–$218.
That area matters because recent sessions repeatedly traded around the low-$220s before momentum weakened. Below it, I would watch $210–$212, followed by the much stronger $200–$205 region. The July recovery established $200 as an important psychological and structural level, while the late-July low around $190 remains the larger downside reference.
As long as NVDA continues forming higher lows above those areas, the recovery remains technically healthy.
A close below $210 would not automatically make the stock bearish, but it would weaken the short-term setup. A sustained breakdown below $200 would be a much more serious warning that the recovery has failed.
Resistance is stacked above
At $218.34, the first challenge is $220–$222.
Above that, $224.50–$227.92 is the major near-term supply zone because recent trading repeatedly stalled around those levels. The August 17 high of $227.92 is particularly important.
A clean breakout above $228 with strong volume would be the confirmation I would want before becoming aggressively bullish.
The next upside reference would then be around $230, followed by the $236.54 record high. A breakout above $236.54 would put NVDA into fresh price-discovery territory.
Volume tells us whether buyers are serious
NVIDIA trades with enormous liquidity, but recent daily volume has varied considerably. Historical data shows sessions above 100 million shares, including approximately 108.8 million on August 12, while August 19 recorded around 63.4 million shares.
That difference matters.
A breakout above $228 on declining volume would be less convincing than a breakout accompanied by a clear expansion in participation. Conversely, a pullback on relatively light volume could simply represent consolidation rather than aggressive distribution.
For me, price + volume confirmation is more useful than price alone.
The moving-average structure remains supportive
One of the strongest arguments for the bullish case is that NVDA remains above its major moving averages. Recent technical reporting placed the 20-day moving average around $208, the 50-day around $206 and the 200-day around $195. The 20-day average had also crossed above the 50-day average, creating a constructive short-term trend signal.
With the stock around $218.34, price is therefore still above all three reference averages.
That tells me the trend has not broken.
However, it also means that a move back toward the 20-day EMA would not necessarily be bearish. A controlled retest around the $208–$210 area could actually create a healthier risk/reward setup than buying directly underneath $228 resistance.
Momentum is positive, but watch RSI
Recent technical readings have shown NVDA with a relatively strong RSI around the upper-60s as the stock approached $225, meaning momentum was strong but approaching overbought territory.
That is exactly the kind of environment where traders can get trapped chasing.
If RSI remains elevated while price breaks $228 with expanding volume, momentum would support continuation. But if RSI weakens while price repeatedly fails around $225–$228, that would create a bearish divergence warning.
MACD should be interpreted similarly. A positive/bullish MACD structure would support continuation, but a bearish crossover combined with a loss of $216 could signal that the next move is a deeper consolidation.
The biggest catalyst is only days away
The most important fundamental event is NVIDIA’s upcoming fiscal Q2 2027 earnings report, scheduled for August 26. Analysts are expecting approximately $91.9 billion in revenue and adjusted EPS around $2.08, according to recent earnings previews.
That means NVDA is entering an extremely important pre-earnings window.
The company’s previous fiscal-year results already demonstrated extraordinary scale: NVIDIA reported $215.9 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue, up 65% year over year, while quarterly revenue reached $68.1 billion. Data-center demand remains the core engine behind the AI infrastructure story.
The market therefore needs more than “good earnings.”
Expectations are extremely high.
Investors will be watching Blackwell demand, data-center growth, margins, hyperscaler spending and the outlook for the next generation of AI infrastructure. NVIDIA’s Rubin platform and continuing expansion of AI computing capacity are also important longer-term catalysts.
My short-term trading map
At $218.34, I would divide the setup into three scenarios.
Bullish scenario: NVDA holds $216–$218, reclaims $222 and breaks $227.92–$228 with strong volume. That could open a path toward $230–$232, with the larger objective around $236.54.
Pullback scenario: Instead of chasing, wait for a controlled move toward $210–$212 or potentially the $206–$208 moving-average region. If buyers defend those levels and momentum turns higher again, the risk/reward becomes more attractive.
Bearish scenario: A decisive breakdown below $210, followed by failure to reclaim it, would weaken the short-term bullish thesis. A deeper loss of $200–$205 would significantly increase the probability of another test toward the $190 area.
These are analysis levels, not guaranteed outcomes.
Risk is rising with the earnings clock
There is one major reason I would avoid oversized positions here: earnings.
NVDA can move significantly after results because expectations are already elevated. Even excellent numbers can produce a sell-the-news reaction if guidance or margins fail to exceed what investors have already priced in.
That makes position sizing especially important around August 26.
For a hypothetical setup, I would prefer risking a small percentage of capital and looking for approximately 2:1 or better potential reward-to-risk rather than entering simply because the AI narrative remains strong.
My overall NVDA view
At $218.34, my bias is cautiously bullish.
The stock remains above the 20-day, 50-day and 200-day moving averages, the broader recovery from $190 is intact, AI infrastructure demand remains powerful, and the upcoming earnings report provides a major potential catalyst.
But $218 is not an unlimited upside zone.
The real technical test is $227.92–$228.
Break that with volume, and $236.54 becomes the obvious next major target.
Fail repeatedly at $225–$228 and lose $216, and I would rather wait for a better entry than force the trade.
For me, the strongest setup is not “NVDA must go higher.”
It is:
Hold support → reclaim $222 → break $228 → confirm with volume.
If that sequence happens before earnings, momentum could accelerate quickly.
If it does not, patience around $210–$212 may offer a cleaner risk/reward opportunity.
NVIDIA remains one of the market’s most important AI infrastructure stocks but at this stage, execution and confirmation matter more than hype.
