Online popcorn time! What are the founder of Movement and former employees of Scroll arguing about?
In the Block industry, friction between different projects occurs from various factors such as technology and community.
And on November 27th, before the fire on X, Movement co-founder Rushi Manche and Scroll employee Toghrul Maharramov (Toghrul had directly referred to users as โe-baggorโ in some posts, and even developed into a MEME in the Scroll community.) and pointed out that โhardly anyone is willing to be recognized as EVM L2 because of the work you doโ, and this technical discussion-induced quarrel also triggered the communityโs follow to the two ecosystems. This article sorts out the ins and outs of the incident, trying to make readers understand the whole story.
The technical term โdefined rightโ
Everything started with a discussion about โpost-confirmationโ on November 26th. In the blockchain network, post-confirmation refers to the validators quickly confirming the correctness of a new block after it is created. This process occurs during the confirmation stage of the blockchain, aiming to speed up transaction confirmation and provide a certain level of security. As a modularized module of the Move architecture, the โpost-confirmationโ mechanism built by Movement first obtains L2 instant confirmation through the economic guarantee of L2 MOVE Token stake, and then performs state updates on L1 after verification. Validators verify the new block in the network, submit signed proofs, and confirm or reject the new block of the stake contract on L1.
Toghrul had doubts about the โpost-confirmationโ of the Movement transaction and discussed it with Movement researchers Andreas and Franck. The dispute between the two sides is whether โpost-confirmationโ itself is another form of pre-confirmation. Toghrul insists that this mechanism is only part of the overall confirmation process and questions whether โpost-confirmationโ actually does not minimize trust in Cross-Chain Interaction, which is essentially equivalent to the Polygon Sidechain and cannot be called an L2. Monadโs DevRel ZenLlama also leans towards the pre-confirmation perspective. Before the final outbreak, all of these discussions were still focused on the definition of technical terms.

In another thread, Rushi also criticized that only the protocols aligned with Ethereum proposed by Uniswap or Flashbot can gain follow, and he claimed to have created thousands of terms for the โuselessโ Ethereum L2. Just after finishing the debate with Movement researchers, Toghrul fired back at Rushi by pointing out that Movement directly forked from Aptos and utilized some infrastructure of the โuseless L2โ he mentioned. He even left a remark: โPlease let go of your arrogance.โ

Perhaps the last arrogant remark has angered Rushi. He replied with a long push, โI have respect for some members of your team, but Scroll and you may be one of the worst projects in this industry, to the point that at least 6 of your colleagues (half of whom are no longer on the team) came to me to apologize for your behavior,โ criticizing his former employer Scroll heavily, and exposing team behaviors such as โpredatoryโ Airdrop distribution, team dumping (secondary market share and overvaluation dumb buying within the team), and Airdrop rat trading, and commented, โTechnical debates are one thing, I am confident that we can improve. If you want to jump ship with Franck, come on. Otherwise, improve your damn chain so that itโs not an obvious eyewash.โ
On the Node where registration for MoveDrop Airdrop was opened on November 27th, the criticism of Scroll received more support from community users, and the debate sparked by technical discussions has also turned into part of project marketing.
Interestingly, Rushi also stated that one-fourth of the Scroll team has applied for positions at Movement in the past 2 months. Toghrul quickly responded and mentioned that he has already left the Scroll team. However, at the time of the response, he had not yet removed the Scroll badge from his X, to which Rushi commented, โEven he feels ashamed of Scrollโ.

Community Feedback
After Rushiโs firing, Toghrul also officially announced his departure from the Scroll team. Some users humorously commented, โThank you for your โconfirmation after the factโ.โ Others asked if Toghrul will join Solana, and Solana founder Toly also remarked, โWeโve been reckless enough.โ

In this incident, a large number of community users condemned Toghrul and even the Scroll team, and he also retorted some users, โWill you get a bigger MOVE Airdrop if you reply to my post?โ

This argument starts with a technical discussion, revealing the conflict between new public chains built with new architectures such as Move and the traditional EVM L2 ecology.
For Movement, there is widespread community support under Rushiโs post, while Scroll excels in ZK technology. Toghrul later posted lamenting that he still hadnโt heard whether Movement is a sidechain or L2, just like Tolyโs comment: โAs long as the Cross-Chain Interaction bridge has multiple signatures, it can be considered L2โ.
