PANews July 29, citing Cointelegraph, reported that blockchain security company AmericanFortress has proposed a cryptographic solution that can protect existing cryptocurrency wallets from future quantum attacks, without users needing to move funds, rotate keys, or change wallet addresses. The scheme was published as a technical paper on the Cryptography ePrint Archive, describing its compatibility with seed-level wallets for systems based on elliptic-curve cryptography such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. It uses zero-knowledge proofs based on the wallet’s original mnemonic phrase rather than replacing existing elliptic-curve cryptography; participating nodes verify these proofs, and users continue to sign transactions with their existing keys. AmericanFortress cited Bloomberg analysis stating that, if sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge, up to $470B worth of Bitcoin may face risk.
