OpenAI expects cloud computing spending to reach $750B by 2030
PANews, July 22—According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is expanding the scale of its data centers and increasing its spending budget in this area. Sources say OpenAI has raised its projected computing power spending through 2030 from about $600 billion earlier this year to about $750 billion. This growth reflects OpenAI reaching new agreements with cloud computing service providers to quickly secure the massive computing power needed to develop and run its AI models. On Wednesday, OpenAI said it will invest $20 billion to launch a data center project named “Camellia” in Effingham County, Georgia. OpenAI’s Vice President of Compute Strategy, Sachin Katti, said the company has signed a contract with Georgia Power to obtain 3.2 gigawatts of power supply between 2028 and 2032, and that the project cost may exceed $30 billion. This could make the facility one of the largest data centers OpenAI has built to date. Sources say OpenAI hired Brent Meo to help ensure the data center project moves forward on schedule; he is one of the lead architects for Musk’s data center buildout projects.
OpenAI has restarted internal work to strengthen control over its data centers. OpenAI has also launched OpenAI Presence, which is now available to eligible enterprise customers via a limited general availability program as a deployed product; self-serve is not yet offered.
