Reuters reported that Polymarket said in a statement that it plans to challenge the decision by France’s national gambling regulator (ANJ) to unilaterally block its website last week through legal procedures in France. The ANJ previously imposed the ban on the grounds that the platform could lead to significant gambling losses for users and that some bets carried a risk of being manipulated. In recent times, global regulators have been tightening their scrutiny of prediction markets. Earlier, the Spanish government temporarily banned Polymarket and Kalshi from operating locally in May, and in June, the US derivatives regulator also released new proposed regulations for the prediction market industry.

Spain, the US, and France have all moved in one after another; how long Polymarket can hold up under this global crackdown is anyone’s guess.

French ANJ says it could lead to major losses—doesn’t that mean users themselves don’t have judgment? It’s not traditional gambling; in essence, prediction markets are still about information aggregation.

To be honest, it’s true that prediction markets are easy to manipulate, especially in cases where market makers dump. Regulators getting involved is also understandable.

Reuters has also reported it, so it sounds like this is a big deal, but I think users don’t care about any regulation—if they can use it, that’s enough.

The prediction market is being treated like gambling, and at its core this is a legal classification issue. Polymarket’s appeal to go through the legal process is the only way forward, but whether it can win is anyone’s guess.
