Analysis: US stock short positions have risen to a high level, and the S&P 500 short ratio is approaching its highest level since 2010

ME News message, July 22 (UTC+8): The Kobeissi Letter posted on X, saying that data shows US stock short positions have continued to rise. Currently, the proportion of short holdings for S&P 500 constituent stocks has increased to about 3.7% of float shares, approaching the highest level since 2010. For the Russell 3000 index constituent stocks, the proportion of short holdings has risen to about 6.1%, also nearing historical highs. Both indicators have continued to trend upward since the start of 2025. In addition, the proportion of short holdings for all stocks listed on the NYSE reached 9.0% in the late June period, setting a historical record high. For comparison, this metric peaked at about 5.0% during the 2008 financial crisis and around 6.0% during the 2020 pandemic. (Source: ODAILY)
