July 21 (UTC+8), Chris Fall, director of the “Center for AI Standards and Innovation” (CAISI), the U.S. Department of Commerce’s institution responsible for AI testing and standards-setting, announced his resignation just three months after taking office. The agency’s predecessor was the U.S. AI Safety Institute, which handles testing and evaluation for advanced AI systems and provides standards support. Fall was appointed director in April this year following the agency’s reorganization, and his sudden departure will leave this critical federal AI office with no acting leader as the Trump administration discusses its next steps on AI safety and regulatory proposals.
