ME News, July 20 (UTC+8): Analyst jukan on X said that the world’s three largest storage-chip manufacturers have stopped developing their own Compute Express Link (CXL) controllers and are switching to chips designed by external fabless companies. Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron have all scaled back or canceled plans to commercialize CXL expansion device controller. Micron was the first to halt its in-house controller R&D and adopted PrimeMass’s solution; SK hynix has also informed its key partners that it will terminate its internal CXL controller development projects and reassign relevant personnel to processing-in-memory (PIM). Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, is said to use its in-house CXL controllers only within its R&D team for research, while its external products allegedly purchase controllers from fabless suppliers. Industry insiders said Samsung has removed its in-house controllers from official commercialization projects and kept them only for frontier R&D efforts. (Source: ODAILY)
