🚨 A new proposal aims to prepare Bitcoin for the threat posed by quantum computers.

BIP-361, still in draft stage, calls for a gradual migration to post-quantum addresses: about three years after its possible activation, it would become impossible to send new BTC to address formats considered vulnerable.
Two years later—after a total transition of about five years—spending based only on the older ECDSA and Schnorr signatures would be heavily restricted.
The proposal also envisions a recovery protocol that would allow certain true owners to prove that they controlled their funds before a quantum attack.
But this mechanism is still to be designed and may not cover all old wallets.
So this is not yet an update adopted by Bitcoin, but a plan currently under debate.
