Humans have an innate drive to build a system of self-evaluation. When clear objective standards are lacking, we instinctively confirm our worth through external comparisons. The problem is that in life, the areas that truly matter often don’t have a single unified answer—external standards can only offer simple measurement, but they cannot define a person’s real value. Long-term reliance on external ratings can easily trap people in a cycle of constant comparison and anxiety. The path to genuine maturity is one that gradually shifts from looking outward for standards to building them from within. A person’s value should not be defined by what others have, but measured by growth after one’s own experiences, the outcomes after one’s choices, and whether one has become a better self. Ultimately, people need to make the transition from “how others evaluate me” to “whether I accept myself,” because only by establishing a personal evaluation system can we gain truly stable inner strength.
