David Sacks criticizes the use of regulation to create FUD and suppress open-source AI competition

PANews July 19 reported that David Sacks, Co-Chair of the U.S. President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, reposted and responded to comments by Dean W. Ball, OpenAI’s Strategic Future Director, regarding Chinese open-source AI models. He said that if the government intentionally creates uncertainty (FUD) by issuing regulatory guidance that lacks sufficient grounds to pressure regulated companies into giving up Chinese open-source models, it would undermine the rule of law and set a dangerous precedent for future regulatory abuse. Sacks said regulatory decisions should be based on facts, logic, and evidence—not deliberately amplifying fear and uncertainty. He also pointed out that current AI policy has entered a critical stage, and that leading closed-source model providers are trying to weaken open-source competition with the help of government power, calling on Silicon Valley to support open competition.
