From the First Trillionaire in the World to Half a Trillion Dollars in Losses, Elon Musk’s Dramatic Story One Month After SpaceX’s IPO

On June 12, 2026, the world recorded a new milestone in history. Elon Musk officially became the first person in modern history whose wealth surpassed the one trillion USD mark, following SpaceX’s debut on the Nasdaq stock exchange. But less than a month later, the story took a drastic turn: Musk’s wealth plunged by hundreds of billions of dollars, and his trillionaire status is now shaky—making this one of the most extreme financial roller coasters ever recorded for a single individual.

Historic Moment on Nasdaq

SpaceX officially listed on the exchange under the stock ticker SPCX on June 12, setting an initial offering price of $135 per share for 555.6 million Class A shares, implying a valuation of about $1.77 trillion. The stock immediately surged 11% at the market open to $150, before ultimately closing up 19% on the first day. This initial public offering broke records as the largest IPO in market capital markets history, raising about $75 billion to $86 billion, more than two and a half times the size of Saudi Aramco’s listing in 2019, which previously held the record.

Musk himself is known to hold about 4.76 billion shares of SpaceX stock plus 352.5 million stock options based on the company’s S1 documents, equivalent to an ownership stake of about 42%. The value of his holdings in SpaceX alone has at times reached above $760 billion to $866 billion. Combined with his stake in Tesla valued at more than $350 billion, Musk’s net worth jumped past the one trillion USD mark for the first time. Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimates recorded its peak at $1.32 trillion in mid-June. Meanwhile, SPCX shares themselves briefly hit a high of $225.64 on June 16, allowing SpaceX to temporarily surpass Amazon’s market capitalization and become one of the ten most valuable companies in the world, with a market cap of about $2.69 trillion.

Political Momentum, Wealth-Tax Debate Explodes Instantly

Achieving the first-ever billionaire status in the world immediately triggered a very fast political reaction, especially from the Democratic camp ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren said via the X platform that ordinary American families would have to work for more than 11 million years to reach Musk’s wealth level. Congressman Ro Khanna of California also pointed to Musk’s wealth as evidence that the economic system is unfairly favoring only a handful of people. Various progressive tax advocacy groups turned this moment into a rallying cry for an even more aggressive wealth-tax agenda targeting the super-rich.

The debate even moved into the concrete stage at the state level. California is scheduled to hold a vote this fall to decide the fate of the 2026 Billionaire Tax Act, a one-time tax proposal of 5% on the total wealth of residents with asset values above $1.1 billion, paid in annual installments over five years, with the potential to generate $100 billion in state revenue. Interestingly, Musk himself would not be directly affected by the proposal because he had already moved his family’s domicile and part of his business operations from California to Texas.

On the other hand, Musk defended himself by saying that throughout his life he is expected to pay more than $500 billion in taxes—a claim he made to underline his contributions to the country amid a wave of criticism over wealth inequality. Critics of wealth-tax policies argue that most wealth held by figures like Musk is not in cash; instead, it is ownership of company shares whose value can swing sharply up and down. This creates serious technical debate over how wealth like this can be taxed fairly and practically.

Latest Developments as of July 19, Shaky Trillionaire Status

This is the most surprising part of the entire story. Only about five weeks after reaching billionaire status, Musk’s wealth saw a sharp correction as SPCX shares continued to slide. Data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index shows consecutive declines, falling from a peak of $1.32 trillion in mid-June to the range of $900 billion to $913 billion last week. Based on the latest available data in mid-July, it was at around $792 billion to $879 billion, and it even recorded a single-day drop of $40.7 billion on July 17 due to simultaneous weakening in both SPCX and Tesla shares.

SPCX shares themselves fell by more than 40% to 45% from their post-listing high and even set a new record low in the range of $123 to $137 per share. They were also negative in 11 of their first 17 trading sessions as a public company. SpaceX’s market capitalization was also eroded, dropping from its peak of $2.69 trillion to about $1.64 trillion—wiping out more than $1 trillion in market value in just one month.

Analysts say this sharp correction reflects more profit-taking activity than fundamental weakening in SpaceX’s business. Even so, some Morningstar analysts previously warned that the initial IPO valuation was highly aggressive, reaching around 94 times annual revenue—far above similar multiples for Meta at 22 times and Amazon at 18 times. The implication was that SpaceX’s operating profit would need to grow 75-fold from 2025 levels just to justify that valuation by 2035. The xAI business segment, now under the SpaceX umbrella, also recorded significant operating losses of $6.36 billion throughout 2025, even as its revenue grew 22% to $3.2 billion.

Outlook Going Forward, Between Space Ambitions and Market Pressure

Looking ahead, the future of Musk’s wealth and the performance of SPCX shares will likely continue to depend on two opposing forces pulling in different directions. On one hand, long-term catalysts remain the continued growth of Starlink’s business, plans for direct-to-mobile services, progress in the Starship rocket program for lunar and Mars missions, and the potential development of space-based data centers—any successful execution could push the company’s valuation back up. Musk still has several assets outside of SpaceX and Tesla that could add to his wealth in the future, including Neuralink, which secured funding at a valuation of $9 billion, as well as the much-hyped humanoid robot project Optimus, which is said to have a large potential market.

On the other hand, pressure continues to come from two directions. First, the extreme volatility of SPCX shares—only weeks old in the public market—makes Musk’s wealth highly sensitive to day-to-day market sentiment. This condition is likely to continue until the stock finds a valuation equilibrium that is more stable. Second, the political momentum around wealth taxes shows no signs of slowing. The outcome of California’s vote this fall could become an important precedent for other states, and the issue of super-rich wealth inequality is expected to remain a central theme ahead of the 2028 presidential election, regardless of the ups and downs in Musk’s wealth figures on paper in the coming months.

In any case, Musk’s story over the past month serves as a real reminder of how fragile wealth tied to the stock price of a company that has just listed can be—where trillionaire status can be reached and nearly disappear again within just weeks, far faster than the policy-debate process that usually takes years before it can truly become law.
