The U.S. Department of Justice has ruled that downloading TikTok on federal devices is no longer illegal
PANews July 19—According to Radio France Internationale (RFI), the U.S. Department of Justice this week ruled that a federal law previously prohibiting TikTok from being installed on federal government devices no longer applies to the current version of TikTok being offered in the U.S. The law was originally aimed at TikTok and subsequent apps owned by ByteDance and its affiliated entities. In a legal memo to the White House Counsel’s Assistant, the Office of the Legal Adviser for the Department of Justice said that Congress at the time banned versions with the same “problematic ownership characteristics.” Whether TikTok may be used on official government devices is now up to each federal agency to decide; agencies may still independently prohibit employees from downloading it based on considerations such as work efficiency. The White House forwarded its request for comment to the Department of Justice.
