SK Choi Taewon: Semiconductor demand next year will increase by at least 50%

PANews July 19 news, according to Jint10, SK Group chairman and Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Choi Tae-won said at a media roundtable held during the Jeju Forum that global semiconductor demand will grow significantly next year. The demand in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector is expected to increase by 60% to 100% compared with this year, and overall semiconductor product demand will also increase by at least 50% to 60%. However, the amount of new supply next year will be nearly zero, and the supply-demand gap is likely to expand further. Choi Tae-won predicted that after the energy and power equipment sectors, materials supply and facility construction may become a new bottleneck constraining industrial development. He said that with the development of the AI industry, shortages may occur in wires and related materials, and the prices of relevant products have already risen, while submarine cables are also in short supply. Because construction specifications change every one or two years, construction difficulty is also increasing. He believes that it will take time for the AI industry to form an ecosystem for independent development. At present, infrastructure investment is huge, but no corresponding results have yet been produced; however, once the entire system starts operating, the AI industry is expected to gradually form a self-developing ecosystem.
