Three Lions Clinch Bronze: England Will Knock France Out in the Third-Place Match
In the World Cup third-place playoff, France face England. Everyone expects the Gallic Roosters to prevail, but I’m going to say it: the Three Lions will win. The reasons aren’t complicated, but they’re solid.
First, England has a stronger hunger. They suffered a turnaround by Argentina in the semifinals—the pain of being dropped from heaven into hell will become the fiercest fuel. France lost to Spain because they weren’t as good; their mindset is easier to digest. England lost to Argentina by collapsing themselves—there’s no way to swallow that bitter anger. A team that takes the pitch with fury is often more terrifying than one that comes out with regret.
Second, Bellingham is the decider. In this tournament, he’s already proven he’s the most complete player in the whole competition—he can take long-range shots, score with his head, create plays, and defend. France’s midfield can’t deal with him; even if Tchouaméni clears everywhere, he still can’t stop a fully fired-up Bellingham. As for France? After Mbappé is contained, he goes quiet; Dembélé is inconsistent; and Griezmann is getting old. In the key matchup, England has the edge.
Third, France’s back line has cracks. Saliba’s absence is a fatal blow. Upamecano is brave but rash; this makeshift center-back pairing will eventually run into trouble against Kane’s runs and Saka’s breakthroughs. Kane hasn’t fully exploded yet this tournament, and the third-place match is the best chance for him to get off the mark.
Fourth, Tuchel’s tactics fit better. High-pressure pressing squeezes France’s build-up space, while quick passing gets around midfield “killing” sequences. The wide areas are used to suppress and limit Mbappé’s runs—this game plan is tailor-made for countering France’s counterattack system. Once France can’t play out the ball, their much-lauded fast counters become nothing but scrap metal.
In the end, this match isn’t about who’s stronger—it’s about who wants to win more. France come with fatigue and the disorientation of having departed; England come with rage and a thirst for redemption. Hungry Three Lions will, in the end, tear the Gallic Roosters’ wings apart.
England will win. Just wait and see.
