BlockBeats message, July 18, amid recent community controversy sparked by Base, crypto KOL Rune posted on X questioning that Cobie’s goal in taking over the Base App is to drive on-chain transactions. Rune said that Base’s current management keeps eroding users’ trust, causing users to believe that “it’s wrong to trust anything related to Base for more than 24 hours.” Under this kind of culture, it is difficult to attract new users.

In response, Cobie said that a few days ago he took over work related to the Base App and Coinbase trading products, but he is not responsible for the Base chain. He admitted that Coinbase has long been distant from users, especially native crypto users, and that Base and Coinbase have also squandered a large amount of users’ trust due to some preventable mistakes. He said he hopes that in the future he can listen more to voices from on-chain users and build products that users truly want to use.

After that, Rune again responded, saying that Coinbase’s biggest problem is not only being distant from users, but also for a long time ignoring— and even harming— its own users. He said that currently more than 10,000 Base users have suffered about 99% asset losses because they trusted the Base/Coinbase management team, and the Base management’s attitude toward the related events further intensified community dissatisfaction.

Rune believes that Base has the infrastructure to become the best Layer2 in the crypto industry, but what it truly lacks is a leadership team willing to take responsibility for users. He said he hopes Cobie can change this situation, but emphasized that Base’s problems today are not only damaged trust—community trust has almost completely been lost.
