Zidane will officially take charge of the French national team this month
The World Cup is always a turning point when some countries replace their coaches. Usually this happens with teams whose results are poor. However, this time, the France team—having reached the semifinals in three consecutive World Cups—has also chosen to change managers.
On July 18, Beijing time, European well-known insider Romano confirmed that Zidane will complete an official signing with France this month. He will take over from Deschamps and lead France to compete in UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.
In fact, Deschamps’s departure was already settled long ago, but who the next head coach of France would be remained undecided. Now, the man who helped France win the World Cup’s trophy during the playing era, and the legendary coach who created the feat of winning the UEFA Champions League three consecutive times, will strive to bring France back to the top of the world.
Zidane formally signs with France this month, leading the team into the 2030 World Cup
On July 18, Beijing time, European football insider Romano confirmed that Zidane will become the next head coach of the French national team. In fact, since last year Zidane has already been the top candidate to be “Deschamps’s successor.” Now, Zidane has confirmed the coaching staff members and will officially sign contracts this month. Romano said Zidane will lead the team in the UEFA Nations League after this, Euro 2028, and the 2030 World Cup.
As Romano reported earlier, Zidane rejected invitations from multiple clubs because, for him, coaching the French national team has always been a “mission of a dream.”
After France were eliminated by Spain in the semifinals and missed the 2026 World Cup final, Deschamps—who has coached the team for 14 years—has officially entered the countdown to his departure. In addition, there has long been public doubt about Deschamps’s squad selection for France, including his usage of Mbappé and Dembélé. However, before the semifinals of this World Cup, Deschamps insisted on putting Mbappé in the central position as the attacking focal point. That approach still allowed the team to surge forward all the way, and it also enabled Mbappé to dominate on the pitch.
After losing 0-2 to Spain, Deschamps said that Spain’s defense was excellent, cutting off spaces in the game, while France also made some technical mistakes: “When the technical level does not meet the expected standard, it is difficult to create threats for the opponent.” In addition, at the pre-match press conference for the third-place match, Deschamps showed impatience with reporters’ questions. For a moment, public opinion about Deschamps swung to another extreme.
But in any case, from coaching France in 2012 to the present, Deschamps has led the team to win the 2018 World Cup, the 2021 UEFA Nations League, and also secured runner-up at the 2022 World Cup. He can be considered one of the most successful head coaches in France’s national football history.
Whether the 54-year-old Zidane can replicate his club achievements at the national-team level remains to be seen.
As a player, Zidane made 108 appearances for the France national team and scored 31 goals. He played in three European Championships from 1996 to 2004 and three World Cups from 1998 to 2006. He helped France win the 1998 France World Cup and the 2000 Netherlands-Belgium European Championship. After the 2006 World Cup ended, Zidane officially retired.
In 2013, Zidane became an assistant coach at Real Madrid. In 2014, he became head coach of Real Madrid Castilla. It was not until January 2016 that Zidane officially took charge as head coach of Real Madrid. During his time at Real Madrid, he led the team to win 9 trophies, achieved the UEFA Champions League three-peat, and created a joint record of being unbeaten for 40 matches across competitions. In 2018, Zidane announced his resignation as Real Madrid head coach, and in March 2019 he took charge of the team for a second time, leading them to win the 2019-2020 La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup.
However, after leaving Real Madrid again in the summer of 2021, Zidane has been without a job ever since. This time coaching France, can Zidane bring the World Cup back to France the way he did during his playing days?
