On-chain Data|Are the “Giant Whales” buying, or selling?

📌 Today’s Event: On-chain analysis remains a popular topic in the market. Many investors check the fund flows between large wallets and exchanges every day, hoping to get ahead of market dynamics.

📈 Market Impact: On-chain data can provide market clues, but it cannot be used alone as a basis for buying or selling.

💬 My View:

Every time you see “giant whale buys in” or “giant whale transfers,” many people immediately assume the price is about to surge or crash.

But in reality, a large transfer could simply be an asset adjustment, a move from cold storage to another wallet, or even internal operations within an exchange.

What’s truly valuable is observing for a long time whether funds continue to flow in the same direction, and then judging alongside trading volume, ETF fund flows, and macro data.

No single indicator in the market is 100% accurate. Learning to analyze comprehensively is what can improve the quality of your judgment.

Many people overlook a key point: on-chain data has latency, and whales also use fake moves. For example, a large deposit into an exchange may be for market making or collateralized lending; it doesn’t necessarily mean selling. You need to look at it together with changes in exchange balances and funding rates, and also filter out transfers that are just internal exchange rebalancing. What’s truly useful is the accumulated net flow over the time dimension.

Yes, if you just look at a single transfer and rush in, it’s easy to end up a “liquidity farm” investor.

You’re right—I’ve seen big whales move funds into exchanges and then dump the market several times, but I’ve also seen cases where they moved funds into cold wallets and those were holders. The long-term trend is only reliable when combined with trading volume.

Agreed—taking a comprehensive assessment is the way to go; relying on a single indicator can easily lead you into a trap.

I already fell into a trap before: I saw a huge whale transfer and chased the rally, then ended up trapped in a loss. Later I learned my lesson—at least I look at the one-week cumulative net flow, and combine it with ETF fund flows; the accuracy is much higher.
