Is Kimi K3 forcing the US AI giants into a corner? Experts predict: Anthropic will urgently push out Opus 5, and GPT-6 may be released early
The rise of China’s AI model Kimi K3 is triggering a global arms race among major AI players! According to the latest prediction from well-known tech commentator Chubby, Kimi K3’s strong performance has already put immense pressure on U.S. frontier labs. He expects Anthropic’s Opus 5 to be urgently released soon, while OpenAI’s next-generation model GPT-6 may also debut early, in order to once again widen the technical gap with China’s models.

As China’s large language models’ technical capabilities surge forward, the Silicon Valley AI giants seemingly can no longer sit back comfortably. On July 17, 2026, Beijing time, tech commentator Chubby posted on the social platform X, deeply analyzing how the launch of Kimi K3 will significantly accelerate the global AI development process.
Opus 4.8 is surpassed, Anthropic fears rushing Opus 5
In the post, Chubby made a bold prediction that Anthropic’s next-generation flagship model Opus 5 will be unveiled soon. He noted that the current Fable 5 is expected to end this coming Sunday; unless the official timeline is extended again, Opus 5 will then be released immediately, with the timing very likely falling either this week or next week.
The key fuse pushing Anthropic to accelerate release is none other than Kimi K3. Chubby emphasized that Kimi K3’s overall performance has already surpassed Opus 4.8, and from the public-relations and market-competition perspective, Anthropic clearly cannot accept being left behind. “In other words, pressure from the East is forcing the West to accelerate model releases,” he summed up.
OpenAI is under threat, GPT-6 could appear early
The same competitive pressure also hangs over AI overlord OpenAI. Although OpenAI’s currently available GPT-5.6 Sol still narrowly leads Kimi K3 in overall rankings, Chubby believes the gap between the two has already shrunk to an unacceptable level.
Given this situation, he speculates that OpenAI will take two possible actions: first, to bring forward the next-generation pretraining model GPT-6, which was rumored to be launched at the end of July or early August; second, to pour in even more massive resources and effort, trying to once again widen the technical gulf between itself and China’s models.
Success isn’t in benchmark scores—it’s about “applying pressure”
In the final section, Chubby offered a sharp commentary on the historical placement of Kimi K3. He said that Kimi K3’s true success does not lie in how astonishing its performance is on benchmark tests, but in the fact that it has practically narrowed the technical gap between China and the United States. This rise-force that cannot be ignored is pushing U.S. frontier labs to take immediate action—so much so that they end up becoming the side that is “under pressure.”
