Wu Says he learned that Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced on July 16 that he has returned $710k to a cryptocurrency fraud victim, the largest single amount returned to date for the state’s network fraud enforcement department. The victim previously fell into a “product review” remote work scam, in which they were asked to use cryptocurrency to front the funds in order to earn commissions, and were then told that the money was “stuck on the blockchain,” requiring them to keep paying fees. Investigators traced the funds to a wallet that consolidated proceeds from multiple scams, and obtained a default judgment through civil forfeiture proceedings.

These remote work scams are all too common. They first ask you to front the funds, and then they come up with all sorts of excuses to demand more money—everyone needs to stay vigilant.

Seeing this kind of news makes me happy for the victims on the one hand, and helpless on the other. Crypto scams keep coming up—what matters most is that many people lack basic security awareness. I hope law enforcement can continue to strengthen supervision and intensify efforts to recover the stolen funds.

A civil forfeiture proceeding obtained a default judgment, indicating that the scammers don’t dare to show up in person, and hoping more victims can get their money back.

Product review remote work sounds like an old scam—how are people still getting fooled? Once the money goes into the blockchain, it’s hard to track. This time, I guess I got lucky.

Enforcement is strong, and it's not easy to recover losses.
