British officials send letter to FIFA demanding Argentina’s three players be banned
On July 16, Ed Davey, leader of the UK Liberal Democrats, confirmed that he has already written to Infantino, calling for the ban of the Argentina players who, after the World Cup semi-final, displayed “Malvinas” banners.
Ed Davey wrote angrily on social media: “After the European Championship final in August 2024, two Spanish players—Rodri and Morata—were banned for singing ‘Gibraltar belongs to Spain,’ and that is only right. Now, those Argentina players who are celebrating while holding up ‘Malvinas Islands belong to Argentina’ banners must also be banned from the final.”
In addition to Ed Davey, UK Business Secretary Peter-Keir also said the move was “completely inappropriate.” The UK official said: “I hope FIFA carries out a thorough investigation.”
The spokesman for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also took a similar stance and again demanded that FIFA launch an investigation: “The World Cup might not be ours, but the Malvinas Islands are unquestionably ours.”
The British officials also specifically named the main three Argentina players involved: including Lo Celso, Romero, and Lisandro Martínez.
In the World Cup semi-final that concluded earlier, defending champions Argentina came back to beat England 2-1, reaching the final for the second consecutive edition. After the match, several Argentina players held up black-letter banners reading the controversial slogan “Malvinas Islands belong to Argentina.”
As is well known, the World Cup rules clearly prohibit players and other members of national teams from displaying political information or slogans during and after matches, and Argentina’s decision to display a Malvinas Islands banner after eliminating England falls under this.
However, indications suggest that this action will lead FIFA to impose economic penalties on the Argentine FA itself, rather than banning the players involved—especially Lo Celso, who is responsible for placing the banner on the pitch.
The highly anticipated World Cup final will kick off at 3:00 a.m. on the 20th, with Argentina taking on Spain. With the final about to begin, FIFA banning the involved Argentina players amid such major controversy will undoubtedly spark a significant backlash.
