Wu Says he learned that the Metropolitan Police of London stated that Anthony Ikenwe, Hamza Bashir, and Kevin Nwamma were sentenced to 6 years, 3 years 9 months, and 6 years in prison, respectively, for impersonating police officers to scam 8 victims and steal more than £4 million in crypto assets. The gang used forged police websites to trick victims into providing account information or transferring funds into so-called “safe accounts,” before laundering the money through a complex network. Police have recovered about £1 million in related assets and seized 40 mobile phones, luxury cars, branded watches, and luxury goods.

The three scammers were each sentenced to about six years; it feels a bit light, considering the case involves such a large amount of money. Still, it’s good that some assets can be recovered—kudos to the UK police.

Crypto security has no small matters—don’t trust any “official” request to transfer funds.

Over $4 million worth of crypto assets were stolen, and only $1 million was recovered, which shows that on-chain tracking still faces difficulties. However, police managing to seize luxury cars and branded watches is also a success, and we hope they continue to crack down on this kind of crime to protect investors’ funds.

Well done! Criminals who impersonate police officers like this should be sentenced more severely.

The scam methods are actually old and cliché, but posing as a police officer along with using a fake website really makes it easy to trick people. Everyone must verify the information through official channels.
