The father of Linux clearly endorses AI programming: Linux will not become an anti-AI project

July 16 news: Linux founder and chief kernel maintainer Linus Torvalds has clearly stated that the Linux kernel will not become a “anti-AI project.” For developers who oppose others using AI, they can fork the project themselves or simply leave.
He said AI is already a clearly useful development tool. The real problem to solve is to have large models help maintainers, not to create low-quality patches and duplicate vulnerability reports. Linux does not force anyone to use AI, but it also will not accept banning others from using it.
The Linux kernel currently allows AI-assisted contributions, but they must be labeled as Assisted-by. AI cannot sign developer provenance certificates; code review and all responsibility still rest with the submitter.
Linus also emphasized that Linux is open source to get better technology, not for “religious reasons.” The kernel project will make decisions based on technical value, and will not refuse AI out of fear of new tools.
