Google NotebookLM has officially been renamed to “Gemini Notebook,” supporting writing code and deep integration with Google Search

Google announced that its popular AI note-taking app NotebookLM has been officially renamed “Gemini Notebook.” According to foreign media outlet The Verge, the app will keep operating as an independent standalone app, while integrating more deeply with Gemini and Google Search. At the same time, it will launch new features for enterprises and advanced users that allow users to write and execute code.

Tech giant Google is further consolidating and strengthening its artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem. On July 16, 2026, Taipei time, according to The Verge, Google announced that its widely praised AI note-taking app NotebookLM has been officially renamed “Gemini Notebook.” This move not only unifies the branding, but also signals that the tool is set to undergo a major functional upgrade.

Despite the new name, Google emphasizes that Gemini Notebook will still exist as an independent app and will not be fully merged into Gemini’s main app, so as to preserve its product positioning focused on notes and knowledge management.

From Project Tailwind to an all-in-one AI assistant

Looking back at the app’s development history, Google first unveiled this personal AI note-taking project in May 2023 at its I/O developer conference under the codename “Project Tailwind,” and then rolled it out widely later the same year in July under the name NotebookLM.

Over the past few years, Google teams have continued to add powerful features to it, evolving it from a simple text tool into an all-in-one AI assistant. For example, it can turn cold notes into an “AI podcast” where a virtual host holds conversations, generate narrative slide decks, and even produce short videos in a TikTok style. More recently, the app has supported connecting notes directly into the Gemini app. In the future, it also plans to bring note features into Google Search’s conversational AI experience “AI Mode.”

Supports code execution with deep cloud integration

Beyond the branding overhaul, the rename also comes with a killer update aimed at professional users. Reports say that Gemini Notebook can now connect to secure cloud computers, allowing users to “write and execute code” directly within the app.

The feature, which was previewed just last month, is already being prioritized for Google AI Ultra and Workspace enterprise users. As for general Pro users, they will also gradually receive access to the feature via the web over the next few weeks. This brand renaming, deeper cross-platform integration, and the launch of new code-execution capabilities all highlight Google’s ambition to make Gemini Notebook a key strategic puzzle piece within its overall AI ecosystem.
