Abstract generation in progress
Bitcoin Lightning Network infrastructure project Breez announced a partnership with embedded wallet infrastructure company Turnkey to provide developers with instant, non-custodial Bitcoin wallet solutions for millions of users. The two sides said developers can integrate Bitcoin payment functionality using a server-side management model without hosting users’ private keys, while users can authorize transactions via methods such as Passkey, without needing a recovery phrase to use Bitcoin services. Breez is a key infrastructure project in the Bitcoin Lightning Network ecosystem, mainly providing the Lightning SDK, enabling developers to embed instant Bitcoin payment capabilities into wallets and social and financial applications. Turnkey was founded by the former Coinbase Custody team, with total funding exceeding $50 million.

The combination of non-custodial + Passkey authorization is brilliant: it solves the pain point of managing users’ private keys while also preserving users’ control over their own assets. Developers can integrate it using a server-side model, enabling them to quickly build wallet-like applications, and Breez’s Lightning Network SDK makes instant payments possible—small-payment use cases are likely to explode.

For developers, this integration includes an SDK and a managed service, saving a lot of underlying work, and makes non-custodial users’ assets safer.

Previously, users of custodial wallets had to trust the platform, and mnemonic-phrase schemes were also easy to lose. This approach uses Passkey so users can authorize with their everyday devices, without the burden of memorizing anything. At the same time, Lightning Network lets transactions arrive in seconds, and it feels like it could attract the mass market. However, user education still needs attention—after all, many new users don’t know what a Passkey is.

Finally, a team is seriously working on user experience—no need to be too obsessed with mnemonic phrases.

The Turnkey team comes from Coinbase Custody and has raised a total of $50 million, so they should have a solid technical foundation. Breez’s Lightning Network SDK is also well-established.

Non-custody is certainly great, but user authorization relies on Passkeys—if the device is lost or there’s an issue synchronizing the Passkey, what’s the recovery mechanism? I hope the partners have considered this.
