The U.S.-Israel alliance relationship is showing “structural cracks.”

Golden Finance reports that Alon Pinkas, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States, said that U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s public attacks on Israel for undermining U.S.-Iran negotiations are “unprecedented in severity.” Pinkas said, “Never before has a sitting U.S. vice president so openly accused Israel of launching a campaign aimed at weakening U.S. policy. In the past there have been disagreements and frictions, but never before, in this intensity, this clarity, and this straightforward opposition to Israel’s lobbying and pressure targeting the United States—this is truly without precedent… and it’s quite shocking.” Pinkas pointed out that this incident shows that the current positions of the United States and Israel are not aligned. He added that friction between allies over the increasingly intensifying war against Iran is extremely worrying from Israel’s perspective, and reflects a “structural shift” in the two countries’ relationship.
Also without precedent is that half of the Democratic members of Congress voted in support of ending aid to Israel. If you had asked any person in Washington’s circles two years ago, they would have asserted it was impossible—yet this voting result clearly reflects a significant shift within the Democratic Party. Of 212 Democratic members in the House, 103 voted to cancel Israel’s $3.3 billion in annual aid. Only one Republican voted in favor alongside the Democrats. Therefore, the real focus is on how Trump will respond. It is believed that last week he spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying Israel’s army should withdraw from Lebanon and Syria. But then Israel’s defense minister publicly stated that he would refuse to withdraw. In the face of a stance that amounts to an almost open defiance of the president’s wishes, how will the White House play its hand? The answer may be revealed soon. (Jin Ten)
