Apple iPad mini 8 leak roundup! First to feature an OLED display, the A19 Pro chip; rumored to launch as early as the second half of 2026

iPad mini, which Apple fans have been eagerly awaiting, is set to undergo a major evolution! According to the latest leaks compiled by overseas media, iPad mini 8 (tentative name), expected to launch as early as the second half of 2026, will be the first to adopt an OLED panel with more precise color reproduction. The screen size may also be slightly increased to 8.7 inches. In addition, the new device is expected to be equipped with the powerful A19 Pro chip and may also add a water-resistant design. However, as component costs continue to rise, consumers may need to be mentally prepared for a “price increase.”

  • Screen upgrade highlights: 8.7-inch OLED panel debuts for the first time
  • Performance and body: straight to A19 Pro, water resistance levels evolve further
  • Expected to debut in the second half of 2026, but the price may face an increase

The lightest tablet under Apple (Apple) — the iPad mini — seems to be brewing a sincere, full-on leap in specifications. On July 14, 2026, Taipei time, the well-known Apple information website MacRumors published a feature titled “OLED iPad Mini: Release Date, Pricing, and What to Expect,” which systematically compiled various rumors and predictions currently circulating about the next-generation iPad mini 8.

Screen upgrade highlights: 8.7-inch OLED panel debuts for the first time

Among these rumors, the most attention-grabbing is the cross-generation upgrade in display technology. Multiple sources, including renowned Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, indicate that the iPad mini 8 is highly likely to become Apple’s next device to fully embrace OLED panels. The new model is expected to use OLED panels supplied by Samsung, and the screen size may also be increased from the current 8.3 inches to 8.7 inches (or between 8.4 and 8.5 inches).

Compared with traditional LCD screens, OLED panels can independently control individual pixels, delivering deeper blacks, higher contrast, and more precise color reproduction. However, due to product positioning, the iPad mini may use only a single-stacked LTPS OLED rather than the extreme high-brightness dual-stacked LTPO OLED found on the iPad Pro. As for whether it will also include 120Hz ProMotion to automatically adapt the refresh rate, there is still no definite conclusion.

Performance and body: straight to A19 Pro, water resistance level evolves again

In terms of core computing power, based on previously leaked Apple code, the new iPad mini codenamed J510/J511 is expected to be equipped with the A19 Pro chip built using the latest 3nm (N3P) process. This chip features a powerful 16-core Neural Engine and an upgraded GPU architecture, enabling it to handle increasingly heavy AI computing tasks with ease. To differentiate the product lineup, the iPad mini 8 may adopt a “mid-range” version of A19 Pro that reduces one GPU core.

In addition, the device design may also see practical upgrades. Rumors suggest Apple may introduce iPad mini 8 with water and dust resistance ratings comparable to those of the iPhone. To reduce the number of openings in the body, Apple may even use a patented “vibration speaker system” developed over several years, emitting sound by vibrating the device’s surface, thereby greatly improving overall sealing.

Expected to debut in the second half of 2026 the soonest, but the price may face an increase

As for the release timing and price most consumers care about, current reports including ETNews, ZDNET Korea, and the well-known leaker Instant Digital all point to “the second half of 2026.” The latest update also notes that Samsung’s panel factory began mass production of the relevant OLED panels starting in June this year.

However, a comprehensive spec upgrade will directly be reflected in the selling price. Currently, the iPad mini 7 starts at $499, but Bloomberg estimates that due to higher manufacturing costs for OLED panels, along with a surge in demand for global AI servers causing memory and storage chips to face shortages and price hikes, the price of the new iPad mini “is very likely to increase,” with a potential increase of up to $100. This also echoes Tim Cook’s recent resigned remark about “price increases being unavoidable.” For consumers with limited budgets, in the future they may only be able to look toward more affordable entry-level iPad models.
