Golden Finance reported that Mehran Kamrava, professor of government at the Georgetown University Qatar campus, said the Iranian government is “deliberately” publicizing news that seven soldiers were killed in a U.S. military attack, in an attempt to rally national sentiments and consolidate public support during the war. He said nationalism is seeing a resurgence inside Iran, and the authorities, by emphasizing that the soldiers died for the country, aim to maintain public support for the regime. He added that such support is crucial because Iran is mired in high inflation, high unemployment, and an economic loss of up to $270B. Kamrava believes Iran knows it cannot stand up to the U.S. militarily, so it is shifting the focus of the conflict to the economic arena, and attacks on shipping are a reflection of this strategy. The U.S. may also adopt similar tactics to respond. He said: “Revolutions can’t happen in hunger. When people begin to worry about their next meal, basic security, and shelter, the U.S. may try to drain Iran’s ability to withstand it economically.” (Jinzi)
