1. Core background recap
On Thursday, July 16, reviewing prior inflation data performance: on Tuesday, the CPI data was favorable; gold surged to around 4100. On Wednesday, the PPI data (5.5) was favorable; gold surged to around 4080. However, after these two favorable data prints, gold failed to continue rising and instead pulled back to the area near where it first started the move, showing a weak, range-bound pattern.
2. Daily timeframe analysis
On the daily timeframe, gold is in a clear downtrend channel. Since March, it has continued to move lower; multiple rebounds have met resistance and fallen back, making it difficult to form a reversal. 4200 is the key turn point on the daily timeframe. If this level is broken down effectively, gold will open up further downside room, and only then is a stronger rebound expected.
3. 4-hour timeframe analysis
The 4-hour timeframe also forms a descending channel, with resistance stacked layer by layer above:
- Last Thursday’s peak near 4200
- Early Saturday’s peak near 4120
- After Tuesday’s CPI data, peak near 4100
- After Wednesday’s PPI data, peak near 4080
Each time gold has reached the resistance at the upper edge of the channel, it has been pressured and pulled back. The current overall downtrend has not changed.
4. 1-hour timeframe analysis
On the 1-hour timeframe, gold forms a triangular consolidation pattern. Focus on the key resistance level at 4080:
- If 4080 is broken through effectively, gold will test higher levels such as 4100, 4120, 4140, and other prior resistance zones; at that point, the market turns into a rebound;
- If 4080 cannot be broken, gold will continue weak consolidation. On the downside, focus on the 4020 support level; if that level breaks, gold will accelerate lower and further test the prior low near 3980.
5. Final judgment
Before 4080 is broken effectively, gold is more likely to maintain a downward direction. Only after a break of 4080, followed by a pullback to confirm support, can the rebound be confirmed as underway; currently, there are no reversal conditions.
