Golden Finance reported on July 16 that U.S. officials, according to The Wall Street Journal, say that after a brief meeting with several senior advisers over the past few days, U.S. President Trump is leaning toward expanding U.S. military action against Iran. Potential options include stepping up airstrike intensity, sending ground troops to seize Iranian islands near the Strait of Hormuz, and bombing a heavily fortified stronghold that could be used for secret nuclear work. Late Tuesday evening local time, Trump held a war room meeting to discuss the U.S. military sending troops to occupy Halk Island along the Strait of Hormuz and other Iranian territories, as well as the possibility of carrying out airstrikes on a nuclear-related target at Pikaša Mountain in Iran that has not yet been identified by the U.S. In addition, the U.S. military may still continue to carry out airstrikes on more targets in Iran, including energy facilities. Trump has not yet made a final decision on the next steps. He has said—both privately and publicly—that he would rather resolve the dispute with Iran through diplomacy. Some U.S. officials say Trump is unwilling to deploy ground troops.
