CoinWorld reported that on Wednesday, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said a tanker transporting Mexican crude oil for Japan’s Cosmo Oil company is expected to arrive in Japan as early as Friday. The tanker’s arrival will provide Japan with an alternative channel for oil supplies to replace those from the Middle East. This tanker will be the first to bring Mexican crude oil into Japan since the war between the U.S. and Israel and Iran broke out at the end of February. The tanker is expected to first dock at the Yokkaichi refinery in central Japan, before continuing to the Chiba refinery near Tokyo. In April, Japanese Prime Minister Shunsuke Tatsunao and Mexican President reached a consensus in a phone call, agreeing that, given how the Iran war has disrupted global oil and natural gas supplies, the two countries should strengthen cooperation in the energy sector.

Cosmo Oil has arguably bet right this time—having positioned itself in advance in Mexican crude oil, it’s now reaping the benefits.

When the Middle East is unstable, they look to Mexico; Japan’s “backup strategy” is playing it expertly.

Takahashi Sano’s move this time is solid—once the phone call was over, the tanker came right along. The efficiency is even higher than I expected.
