Golden Finance reports that a video shows the bulk carrier “Luni” (IMO number 9070711) suffering a keel failure near Abas Port, ultimately breaking into two sections and sinking in the shallow seabed of the northern anchorage in the Strait of Hormuz. The “Luni” has been in service for 32 years and is already well beyond the normal service life of merchant vessels. There is currently no authoritative report on the sinking incident, but rumors claim that a few days earlier it collided with another merchant ship, causing damage to the hull; the damage spread rapidly, eventually leading to a catastrophic accident. In addition, the keel failure may also have been the result of a heavy torpedo attack or a rapid sinking attack. Both attack methods involve detonating a large explosive payload below the middle of the hull, forcing the ship’s body upward to break it apart. Although the US military has been carrying out intense strikes in the Abas Port area, there have been no reports of any kinetic attack on the “Luni.” (Jin 10)
