Economy: Mainland China’s June retail sales rose 1% year-on-year; forecast was -0.1%

The National Bureau of Statistics released that in the first half of the year, China’s total retail sales of consumer goods reached RMB 24.87 trillion (the same below), up 1.3% year on year, while the market expected an increase of 1.2%. Of this, retail sales of consumer goods excluding automobiles were RMB 22.9 trillion, up 2.8%. In June, total retail sales of consumer goods were nearly RMB 4.27 trillion, up 1% year on year, versus a market expectation of a decline of 0.1%. Of this, retail sales of consumer goods excluding automobiles were RMB 3.89 trillion, up 3%. By location of operating units, in the first half of the year, urban retail sales of consumer goods rose 1.2% year on year; rural retail sales increased 2.5%. In June, urban retail sales of consumer goods rose 0.8% year on year; rural retail sales increased 2.1%. By type of consumption, in the first half of the year, retail sales of goods were RMB 22.05 trillion, up 1.1% year on year; catering revenue grew 2.8%. In June, retail sales of goods were RMB 3.79 trillion, up 0.9% year on year; catering revenue grew 1.2%. By retail business format, among retail business units above a designated size, convenience stores and supermarket retail sales rose 6.6% and 3.8% year on year, respectively; specialty stores, department stores, and branded specialty stores saw retail sales fall 1.5%, 2.1%, and 8.7%, respectively. In the first half of the year, nationwide online retail sales of goods and services grew 5.2% year on year. Of this, online retail sales of goods grew 4.8%; within online retail sales of goods, food, apparel, and daily-use goods increased 16.8%, 6.2%, and 1.3%, respectively.
